A Day at Rob's Cottage
So there I was, awake but not quite. I rolled over to discover a stream of light fracturing through the leaves and then softly rolling through the window. The king sized bed was so comfortable as I lay snuggled in the duvet that I was tempted to just grab my book and stay there all day. But wait, what’s that sound? Then comes a call from the kitchen – “SHIP!”

I jump up and rush to the doorway. The brightness from the wall of glass overwhelms my senses for a moment and then my reality comes into focus. There stands my better half, on the treetop deck, with a backdrop of blue sky, dotted with cotton ball clouds. As I move through the great-room toward the deck, I see it - a massive red and white ship gliding through the water, so close it feels surreal. As I step outside, the warmth of the day envelops my body as I take in the sheer beauty of the St. Lawrence River from my tree top vantage point. It was at that moment that I realized, "This Was Only My First Morning At Rob’s Cottage".
Under the shade of the retractable awning, we had breakfast with the kids as we planned the festivities for the day. We couldn’t wait to get down to the waterfront and it was decided, the kids would go on ahead while Jan and I would meet them at the boat launch with our rented fishing boat (from Gilbert Marine in Brockville). As we backed the boat to the launch, we were surprised to find the kids already building sand castles at the water’s edge. Once the boat was unloaded and tied to the 40 foot dock, we had a chance to take in the tranquility of the bay. Nestled between maple and evergreen-covered, granite outcroppings, the bay provides safe harbor and magnificent beauty.
We all jumped into the boat and spent the balance of the morning discovering the neighbouring islands.
After a morning of exploration and a little fishing, we came back to the bay and barbequed hamburgers. The afternoon music kept a lively tone as the kids played and swam in the sandy bottomed bay, while Jan and I were content to relax under the shade of a Maple.
Around 4pm the decision was made to head back up to the cottage and prepare for our friends who would be spending the next two nights in the guest suite. They arrived just in time to catch the soft late day sun, which we enjoyed over cocktails on the treetop deck.
After dinner the kids talked us into having a fire down at the bay. The quiet of the night coupled with the moons reflection on the water at this time of night is so relaxing especially around a campfire. As the fire burned down to coals and the kids (still sticky from roasted marshmallows) fell asleep in our arms, the only thought that came into my head was, “I wonder if next week is still available”?
This was one Day at Rob’s Cottage – Imagine a week.
